[How to] Detect memory errors in Windows Vista
At times you may get bugged with blue screens, sudden reboots, unbootable system, computer crashes causing illegal operations etc. Well its time to check memory related errors. You can check your system’s memory for errors by using Windows Vista’s in built Memory Diagnostic Tool. Following is the path :
Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Device Manager ->Memory Diagnostics Tool
Once you double click Memory Diagnostics Tool, below window will appear.

Now, you can choose between two options for when to run the Memory Diagnostics Tool:
- You can restart your computer and run the tool immediately.
- You can restart your computer and run the tool later.
If you choose to restart your computer and run the tool immediately, make sure that you save your work and close all of your running programs. The Memory Diagnostics Tool will run automatically when you restart Windows. While the Memory Diagnostics Tool runs, you will see a progress bar indicating the status of the test. Once the test is done, Windows will again restart automatically.
If the Memory Diagnostics Tool does not find any errors, you’ll get a message that no errors were found. But, if it detects errors, contact your computer or memory manufacturer for more information. Some advance users can do some of the initial analysis like reinstalling the computer memory modules, swap or replace the computer memory modules, updating system BIOS etc. But, I would strongly recommend not to try any of above if you are not confident and contact your computer or memory manufacturer.
