[How to] Redirect traffic from your old wordpress blog to your new self hosted domain

Assuming, you have bought your own domain and hosting and transfered all the blogs from your free wordpress blog to new domain. For more information on this topic take a look at my post How to Move your blog from free wordpress to self hosted domain.

Now, the last but very important step is to redirect all the traffic from your old wordpress blog to the new domain. This servic is provided by WordPress only. This is a paid service and will cost you 9.97 credits(in WordPress 1 credit is equal 1$). So, you hav to spend 10$ for availing this service for 1 year. After one year you need to renew it. Now quickly coming to the procedure. Below are the steps.

1) Login to your old free wordpress blog.

2) Buy credits : Go to ‘Upgrades’–>’Gifts’. Below scree will appear

Wordpress buy credits

Put 10 in the box and click on ‘Credits’. This will redirect you to the payment page. If you pay through credit card then it’ll take only a few minutes to realize the credits in wordpress.

3) Add domain : Go to ‘Upgrades’–>’Domains’.

Domain

Once you click on Domain, a page will appear where you need to put name of your new domain (tech2know.in)

Wordpress Add domain

Now click on ‘Add domain to blog’. This will result in a new page as shown below

Wordpress add domain page

The number of credits which you have will be shown on the very first line of this page under the heading ‘Credits’. After making sure you have the credits, its time to map your old blog to new domain. For this you need to make changes to the name servers of your domain. You should enter the wordpress name servers as listed on the page and below also.

  • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
  • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
  • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
  • It is not mandatory to enter all the 3 name servers. You must enter at least two of them. For the process of changing the name servers, take a look at step 6 of my post How to Move your blog from free wordpress to self hosted domain.

Please note down the name servers which are already configured in your domain because you will have to revert back the changes once redirecting procedure completes. Further, your site will stop working until you revert back the changes to the old ones.

    4) Now repeat step 3 again in the intervals of 1 hour because It takes some time for the name server change to be effective. Once step 3 is successful, the new domain will appear in the list of domains as shown below

    Set primary domain

Here my new domain appeares in the list. Just select it and click on ‘Update primary domain’ and its sone. From this point of time all the traffic to your old blog will be redirected automatically to your new domain.

Last but not the least,  Don’t forget to change the name servers of your new domain to the old ones i.e remove wordpress name servers and put the old name servers which you have noted down in step 3.

    Thats it for now friends.
