Friends, I think it is absolutely right to say that world wide web has become an integral part of our life. We surf the web daily many times for various reasons. Primarily for searching the information that we need. And, no doubt that most of the time we get it. Be it checking mails, promoting your business, booking air and train tickets, help in school projects, searching for jobs etc. World wide web has provided us a facility through which we can get any kind of information by just switching on our computer.

All these information is provided on one website or the other which together forms world wide web. These websites are created and manages by people like us only and we can also call them webmasters. These guys put a lot of hard work in searching for the valuable content, compiling it and then put it on their website or blog site for the benefit of all.

Unfortunately, a website might get infected with a malware and despite of its good and useful content, its information cannot reach the targeted audiences because search engines shows a warning when the site appears in search results. Obviously a visitor will think twice before clicking that link. Therefore it is very important for a webmaster to keep his/her website malware free. For a novice webmaster like me, it is a bit difficult to scan each and every line of PHP code and search for malware infection.

So, how to scan your website for malware.

1) With Google labs feature

Well, Google has already provided a feature in its webmaster tool which tells you whether your website is infected with any malware or not. Of course you need to register you website in the tool. Its very easy. Just go to www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ and login with your Gmail account. Add and verify your website. Afterward, you can see the malware detection results in Labs—> Malware details as shown below :

This webmaster tool keep checking the added website but does not provide a facility for manual scanning at any time you want.

2) With QualysGuard

I just came to know about another free service called QualysGuard from Qualys. QualysGuard® Malware Detection is a FREE service that proactively scans web sites of any size, anywhere in the world for malware infections and threats. QualysGuard Malware Detection provides businesses with automated alerts and in-depth reporting for effective remediation of identified malware to help businesses protect their web sites and web site visitors from malware. Some of the important feature of QualysGuard are :

• Automated malware detection.
• Automated alerts when malware is found.
• Behavioral and Static Analysis methods which results in near zero false positives.
• Identifying vulnerable code snippets for quick and easy removal of malware.

So what are you waiting for. Just go to http://www.qualys.com/ and register for website scan. Its Free and easy. You just need to fill below information. All fields are mandatory.

Procedure to use QualysGuard

1) After registration, you will receive an e mail from Qualys in which you have to click on the given link to set password for your Qualys account as below. The link is valid only for 5 days. The password must be between 8 to 12 characters and must contain at least one number or special character.

Just press ‘Enter’ after filling and confirming the new password.

2) You will be taken to terms and condition window. Accept it and you will be asked to supply information about your website.

3) Click ‘Next ‘and below window will appear. Now you have to provide an e mail address which is on the domain. For example, I want to scan http://tech2know.in then I have to provide an email id like admin@tech2know.in.

4) Click ‘Next’ and the last optional step would be to setup daily scan where you can specify whether to scan your website daily, if yes then at what time and intensity of scan as shown below.

5) Click ‘Finish’ and you are done. Following screen will appear where you can immediately start a manual scan on your website.

NOTE : When you click on ‘Start scan’ you will see that the scan is not running. Well, you just need to check your domain e mail address(Remember, I have supplied admin@tech2know.in in Step 3 above). You will receive a link at domain’s e mail address. You have to click the link in 5 days. This will authorize you to scan the website. So, just click on this Link. You will be asked to login into QualysGuard account. Use your mail id, which you have provided during registration, as username and password which you have set in step 1. A message appears which confirms that you are now authorize to scan the website.

I have already performed a scan. The scan was quite fast and reports of the scan are very comprehendible. Do try it once.
