Google Refines Image Search for Android and iPhone

We all have searched for some images on Google and most of the time got the required image on the first page itself. If we are surfing on a computer then it is most likely that we go to the second page as well. May be third too, just to look if any better option is there. But, if the search is performed using a phone, Android or iPhone, then it becomes quite important to optimize the results to enable user to view as many images on a page, scan through pages fast etc.

Considering this in mind, Google has redesign mage Search for mobiles.

In the redesign of Google Image Search for mobile, available today for iPhone 3.0+ and Android 2.1 devices, we focused on making it easy to quickly see as many image thumbnails as possible:

The thumbnails are square to maximize the number of images we can get on the screen at one time so you can scan them quickly
You can swipe to see the next or previous page of results, or tap the large, stationary ‘Next’ and ‘Previous’ page buttons
We optimized for speed so that the images appear quickly when you browse

When it comes to viewing the images, we now make them as large as possible by introducing a special image viewing page:

The black background emphasizes the image and the buttons fade after a few seconds so you can just see images with little distraction
Easily browse through the images by swiping from picture to picture

[How to] Update Google Calendar with Text Message or SMS

Whomsoever uses Gmail, must be aware of Google calendar. This is a very useful tool which you can use to maintain your appointments and other important schedules. You can also share the schedules with your friends. Sharing of schedules makes it very easy for you to plan an outing with friends.

You can activate Google calendar via Settings—>Labs tab—>Google calendar gadget.

Well, the calendar gadget is now activated in you Gmail account and you can view the same at top left corner in your Gmail account. . But, this post is not about how to activate calendar. Its about how you can update your Google calendar via text message. Yes, this can be done very easily. First you have to configure Google calendar for this feature. Below are the steps :

1) Login into your Gmail account

2) Click on ‘Calendar’ at top left corner. This will open the calendar.

3) Click ‘Settings’ at top right corner.

4) Click on ‘Mobile setup’ tab.

5) Now you need to select country, your mobile number and carrier. Carrier is your mobile number service provider.

You can see full list of supported carriers for your country by clicking here. For India below is the list of supported carriers :

Aircel Cellular Limited
Bharti Airtel Limited
BPL Mobile Communications Ltd
IDEA Cellular Limited
Reliance Telecom Limited
Spice Communications Limited
Vodafone

6) On clicking ‘Send verification Code’, you will receive a code on the mobile number which you have mentioned in ‘Phone number’ field.

7) Fill that verification code in ‘Verification code’ and click on ‘Finish setup’.

How to send event updates

Send a text message to “GVENT” (48368) with information about an event, like “3pm cappuccino at Borrone’s,” and this event will be added to your calendar. Just like the “Quick Add” feature in Google Calendar, GVENT will pop the event into your calendar in the right place. You’ll get a text message back confirming the details of your event. Or, send the word “day” to “GVENT” to get a text message response containing all of your scheduled events for today, “next” for your next scheduled event, or “nday” for all your events scheduled for tomorrow. Google Adds Drag and Drop Feature in Gmail For Attaching Files

We all know that the normal procedure to attach files in Gmail is to click on ‘Attach a file’—> ‘Select the file’—>Click ‘Open’. Google has just added another new feature in Gmail which will enable us to just drag and drop files for attaching the same in Gmail.

Currently the feature is enabled for Chrome and Firefox browsers. Google will enable this for other browsers as soon as they support this feature.

Google Added Nested Labels and Message Sneak Peek in Gmail

Continuing with its quest to add new and useful features in Gmail, Google has added two more labs features to help in enhancing the user experience. The two features are ‘Nested Labels’ and ‘Message Sneak Peek’.

You can activate both the features via Settings –> Labs tab.

1) Nested labels

You can create complex hierarchies of labels if that’s the way you like to organize your mail, and you can expand/collapse labels to save space. You’ll always be able to tell whether a given label contains unread messages in its collapsed child labels by looking at whether it’s bold or not.

2) Message Sneak Peek

This feature will enable you to preview messages to get a glimpse on what they contain and maybe take immediate action without opening them.

Once you enable this feature, right-clicking on a line in your inbox shows a preview pane with the message in it as shown below

Google added File Transfer Feature in Orkut and iGoogle Chat

Friends, this is a very useful feature added by Google in Orkut and iGoogle chat. This is a file transfer feature through which you can send a file to your online friends from within the chat windows. Now no need to login into your mailbox for sending files. Just click on ‘send a file’ option and attach the file to be sent. This feature has not been implemented in Gmail yet but Google has the wise plan to do so soon .

Have you ever wanted to quickly send a file to a friend who’s online? Now you can share pictures, documents and other files directly with your friends while chatting in iGoogle and orkut, without having to switch to email to send the file as an attachment. File transfer works directly in the browser so you don’t need to install anything. Just start a conversation with a friend and click “Send a file…” in the “Actions” menu. Feed Not Displaying/Appearing Properly in Google Chrome, Try RSS Subscription Extension by Google

Friends, I just noticed that my website’s feed http://tech2know.in/feed is not getting displayed properly. When I typed http://tech2know.in/feed in Chrome’s address bar and pressed enter, I noticed that all the content is appearing in plain text format which no doubt is totally incomprehensible. It looks cryptic. I was amazed that the feed URL was working fine in all other browses like Firefox, Internet Explorer etc.

I was quite annoyed with this and tried my best to check all the settings of my site. Everything was fine. Still, Chrome was not displaying the feed properly. Below is a screen shot of the format in which the feed was appearing :

Now you must have understood why I was thinking so much about this. Well, you might also be facing same situation in viewing feeds of various websites in your Chrome Browser.

The Solution

Later I found that there is not problem with the site itself. Actually, Chrome doesn’t support this functionality by default and Google has provided an extension for the same. Its called as RSS Subscription Extension.

How to install RSS Subscription Extension

Just click here and click on ‘Install’ button on the page. the same is shown below:

Once RSS Subscription Extension is installed, you will be able to view feed of any website properly.

Orkut Chrome Extension – Receive Orkut Updates and Scrap Notifications

Friends, many of us are using Orkut and would appreciate an application which allows to Receive Orkut updates and scrap notifications through a pop up menu. Well, now we have an extension for Google Chrome called Orkut Chrome Extension which solves the purpose.

So, if you are Google Chrome user then this is for you. Orkut Chrome Extension enables you to quickly jump to a friend’s page, share a page on orkut and receive new scrap/update notifications.

Once installed, below symbol will appear on your your Chrome browser.

Click on the symbol and you will be asked to login to your Google account. Login to your account and Click on ‘Grant access’. That’s it. Now you can enjoy the services offered by Orkut Chrome Extension.

Google added Equations in Google Docs

Some days ago, Google added translation to Google Docs to make multi-lingual sharing easier. Now, another new feature has been added by some interns on Google Docs team. This feature will make Google Docs more useful to students.

An equation editor has been created so you can easily complete problem sets online or write papers that include equations. If you’re taking math, you can now take notes in class or answer questions using Google Docs.
