Ghost is Shutting Down Free Services from 15 March

Earlier I had written about Cloud computing and free cloud service by Ghost. Today I have received an e mail saying that G.ho.st is shutting down its free cloud service from 15th March. If you have any data on their cloud then move/copy it to your personal system.

Below is screen shot of the mail from Ghost.

They have given following links which have instructions to download your data.

To download individual files

To download whole folders with the bulk uploader (Java required)

To migrate Ghost Mail Inbox: (POP3)

So, what are you waiting for. Save your data as soon as possible.

Google added contact chooser option in Gmail

Almost all of us are using or have used Gmail at some point of time. Users of Gmail rely pretty heavily on auto complete to add recipients. Auto complete is a functionality which suggests the recipients when you type in ‘To’ , ‘Cc’ or ‘Bcc’ boxes. Till now we had to remember the name, mail id or at least a few characters of any one or both to utilize Auto complete feature for adding recipients to whom we want to send a mail. This generally becomes difficult as the number of contacts grows in your list.

To make the things more easier, Google has added Contact chooser option in Gmail. This enables you to see all the contacts and choose all or some of them by clicking on any of them. Just click on ‘To’, ‘Cc’ or ‘Bcc’ as shown below and and Contact chooser is at your service.

Below is the contact chooser window which will appear on clicking on any of the above.

Further, you can also choose a specific group through the drop down as shown below and Contact chooser will show you all the contacts of that group. To view and choose from all the contacts, just select ‘All contacts’ from the drop down.

Well, this is indeed a useful feature which will enable you remember all the people you want to include on your email. So, what are you waiting for. Just give it a try and share your opinion on the same.

Join The Twitter Conference in LA for $299

If you’re interested in joining with Alex, Ryan and a whole bunch of Twitter enthusiasts ranging from businesses to celebrities, check it out. The exact date is September 22nd-23rd, 2009, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Alex and Ryan work in the platform team without which all the cool Twitter apps we use and love would not be possible. The purpose of the meet is to share information, discuss ideas, and hanging out a bit. If that’s not enough, there’s an open bar on the first night.

Microsoft cuts price of high-end Xbox by $100

Microsoft Corp is slashing the price of its high-end Xbox 360 model by $100,giving compitition to Sony PlayStation 3. Though Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said the price cut has been in the works for some time, and was not a response to Sony’s move, which was announced last week yet the decision seems a repercussion of Sony’s decision of cutting down the price of its Playstation 3 to $299, considering the situation.

Microsoft will drop the price of the Xbox 360 Elite to $299.99.

The price on the entry-level Xbox Arcade model will stay at $199.99, and Microsoft will phase out its mid-range Pro console, leaving it with two models. The Pro will sell for $249.99 until supplies run out. The global price cut is effective Friday.

Well, whatever be the reason because of which Microsoft is reducing the price of Xbox 360 Elite. The good news is that Xbox 360 Elite will fit into the budget of may more gamers .

Google Chrome Security Fixes

Google has released new security fixes for its Google chrome 2.0.172.43 and has released the same to Stable channel. Below are the fixes :

1) CVE-2009-2935 Unauthorized memory read from Javascript

A flaw in the V8 Javascript engine might allow specially-crafted Javascript on a web page to read unauthorized memory, bypassing security checks. It is possible that this could lead to disclosing unauthorized data to an attacker or allow an attacker to run arbitrary code.

2) Security Fix: Treat weak signatures as invalid

Google Chrome no longer connects to HTTPS (SSL) sites whose certificates are signed using MD2 or MD4 hashing algorithms. These algorithms are considered weak and might allow an attacker to spoof an invalid site as a valid HTTPS site.

3) CVE-2009-2414 Stack consumption vulnerability in libxml2

Stack consumption vulnerability in libxml2 2.5.10, 2.6.16, 2.6.26, 2.6.27, and 2.6.32, and libxml 1.8.17, allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a large depth of element declarations in a DTD, related to a function recursion, as demonstrated by the Codenomicon XML fuzzing framework.

4) CVE-2009-2416 Multiple use-after-free vulnerabilities in libxml2

Pages using XML can cause a Google Chrome tab process to crash. A malicious XML payload may be able to trigger a use-after-free condition. Other tabs are unaffected.

Google develops new tools for offering more services to websites

It is only some time ago Google launched Google services for websites. For example, Google webmaster tool which help you understand site traffic, Google Custom and Site search which helps you in adding search functionality on your webiste in no time etc. The features help you to drive traffic to your websites, enhance your sites and improve user retention.

Now, Google has added three new tools to above set of existing ones and I am pretty sure that these are going to prove very useful to the site owners in terms of monitoring and enhancing their website. Below are the same as mentioned at official Google’s blog :

1) Web Elements allows your customers to enhance their websites with the ease of cut-and-paste. Webmasters can provide maps, real-time news, calendars, presentations, spreadsheets and YouTube videos on their sites. The Custom Search Element provides inline search over your own site (or others you specify) without having to write any code and various options to customize further.

2) Page Speed allows webmasters to measure the performance of their websites. Snappier websites help users find things faster; the recommendations from these latency tools allow hosters and webmasters to optimize website speed. These techniques can help hosters reduce resource use and optimize network bandwidth.

3) The Tips for Hosters page offers a set of tips for hosters for creating a richer website hosting platform. Hosters can improve the convenience and accessibility of tools, while at the same time saving platform costs and earning referral fees. Tips include the use of analytics tools such as Google Analytics to help webmasters understand their traffic and linguistic tools such as Google Translate to help websites reach a broader audience.

Google expands YouTube Mobile App to five new languages.

Google announces that the YouTube Mobile Application for Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 devices is now available in five new languages. The applicationnow supports content in Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Swedish, and Czech which brings the total number of languages the app supports to 12.

Intel Acquires Software Company RapidMind

Intel, a well known name in chip manufacturing, has aquired RapidMind.

RapidMind is based in Waterloo, Canada, whose Multi-core Development Platform simplifies the development of parallel applications, reducing the cost and timelines of software development when compared to multi-threaded projects, and greatly improves the likelihood of project success.

Oracle wins U.S. approval to buy Sun Microsystems

Software giant Oracle Corp has won U.S. antitrust approval to buy computer maker Sun Microsystems, clearing a key hurdle in the companies’ plan to close the $7.4 billion deal before the end of this month.

Oracle said on Thursday that the deal cleared the U.S. Justice Department with no restrictions. The takeover also requires approval by the European Commission. Sun’s shareholders have approved the deal and Oracle has said it expects to close the deal by Aug. 31 .

Twitter to add Location Sharing Feature

Twitter will offer an optional feature which will allow developers to add location details( latitude and longitude) to any tweet.

Biz Stone, Twitter co-founder, stated in a blog post on the official Twitter blog that :

we’re gearing up to launch a new feature which makes Twitter truly location-aware. A new API will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any tweet. Folks will need to activate this new feature by choice because it will be off by default and the exact location data won’t be stored for an extended period of time. However, if people do opt-in to sharing location on a tweet-by-tweet basis, compelling context will be added to each burst of information.

For example, with accurate, tweet-level location data you could switch from reading the tweets of accounts you follow to reading tweets from anyone in your neighborhood or city—whether you follow them or not. It’s easy to imagine how this might be interesting at an event like a concert or even something more dramatic like an earthquake. There will likely be many use cases we haven’t even thought of yet which is part of what makes this so exciting.

Twitter is going to release geolocation to platform developers before they add the feature to Twitter.com. Later, we’ll add it to their mobile web site and Twitter.com as well.
